365 Snap Shots of Life Blog Challenge: Day 7

January 7,2012

I took this picture of my daughter in the spring. The cat she’s holding is Ladie, our family pet. Ladie  just wandered into our back yard one day and rubbed herself up against my oldest daughter. She picked her up and then Ladie never left our home again. It’s been a few years since then, and Ladie has turned out to be the best pet we ever had. We suspect that she might have been one of those pets that people are forced to abandon when they have to leave their homes in a hurry after the bank has  foreclosed on their property. Abandoned pets on foreclosed properties is a big problem here in Nevada. Ladie also could have been raised  with a dog because she behaves more like a canine. By the way, she is a Scottish Fold, hence the small ears.

January 5,2012

The girl with a million dollar smile,

will make your life worth while.

She is bright,

like the first day of spring.

In her hair-strands of spun gold.

Her presence warms you up.

With her in your life, you never feel old.

The girl with the million dollar smile…

…I’m so glad to know her!

365 Snap Shots of Life Blog Challenge: Day 4

I am starting a year-long blog challenge. The idea just came to me after I was done viewing all the photos I took on my trip. Here it is, come rain or shine, hell or high water, I will post a photo I took and I will attach a short story or poem or at least a personal comment. There won’t be any web images on this challenge; in this way, I’ll be whetting my writing appetite and having to dust off my camera and start shooting snap shots of life.

Malibu Sunset

The sun has set.

As you look back on your day,

what did you get?

With whom did you bet?

When you see the sun’s last ray,

who did you cheat?

Who did you beat?

Sort it all out at dusk.

Sort it all out before you hit the hay.

Make yourself this promise:

Tomorrow will be a better day.

365 Snap Shots of Life Challenge: Days 1-3

Hello Dear Reader,

I’m back from my holiday in Cali.  By the way, I like saying that I went on holiday so much better than I went on vacation. No, I’m not British and yes, I love the way they speak English in GB. Going on holiday implies mystery and adventure  while going on vacation, sounds so plain and mundane. Going on holiday excites me while going on vaca means I vacated my current premises and I’m not so sure where my feet are going to land next..

Since it’s already the 3rd day of the year, I’m already running behind so for today’s post I’ll put up 3 photos.

Redondo Beach, CA Tour Guide

January 1, 2012

This is the place where the birds lead you around. If bird could talk oh what tales they would tell of their lives lived in ease. I’m sure they loath pesky camera crazy tourists like me, invading their private lives with an intrusive camera lens.

Spider Man's Hind Quarters

Ok, I wasn’t going for his behind no matter what you think. Spider Man and Shrek are betting on which dumb pedestrian is going to avoid using the cross walk so they can get hit on Hollywood Blvd.

Coming to a Bookstore near you in 2012

There is nothing like free advertising for my new book. I was in Santa Monica beach before heading home. My kids were all  writing on the sand and I said,” Why not? Everybody needs a free plug now and then right?”

30 Day Blog Challenge: Day 23

Please refer back to my earlier posts and read what this challenge is about so that the later posts make sense :)

Day 23 Question #23: What’s the best gift you’ve ever received from your children?

Answer: This question just made me chuckle as I readily knew the answer. I grew up in a very serious home where children were expected to behave as little adults. I had to suppress my humour a lot growing up because it was deemed inappropriate by the adults who raised me. I love to laugh and that is one of the best gifts my kids give me everyday. They all are hilarious in different ways.

My oldest girl loves to act and impersonate some famous celebs. Her rendition of Julia Child is hysterical. One time we had some friends over for dinner and she did her Julia child impression for our friends. They still talk about it because it was a hoot. My second daughter is witty and can come up with the best one liners. Sarcasm is her favorite way to get me laughing.  My son has his own brand of jokes that he and his younger sister make up and when they get going with it, it is non-stop giggles. My youngest daughteris the girl of a thousand or more faces. I often wonder how can such a beautiful face turn ugly, goofy hilarious in five seconds flat.

Girl of a Thousand Faces
Pretty to Goofy in 5 Seconds Flat!

All my kids have perfect timing as well.

My husband and I have often quipped that we don’t need TV when we have four funny, fun-loving kids who love entertaining us!

The Birthday Cat

There once was a town called Mathicadoodle

it had many farms, many pigs, many poodles.

There once was a birthday cat, her name was Ladie.

She would send out gifts, even if your name was Pop or Katy.

Now on your birthday, she’d go to your door

She would say, ” Get out of bed it’s 10 after 4!.”

2 minutes later you went to get dressed,

you had a new outfit, you looked your best!

At 10:30 a.m. in Mathicadoodle,

time for your birthday lunch on a safari poodle.

On the poodle’s back there is lots of food,

you’re living your life in the happiest mood.

So after that you climb a wall of Skittles.

Why, it was 12 o’clock time for a band of fiddles!

So fiddlers played fiddles

and picklers played pickles,

the music was so GREAT!

it felt like it tickles.

The birthday cat was  ready for her 2 o’clock bath.

Katy said, ” I’m glad I’m not in school I don’t have to learn math.”

So as they dried off, they started a cheer,” I’m free to be me!

” I’m glad I’m not a deer!”

They went into the jungle of Mathicadoodle.

There were flowers that smelled like pears, peas and noodles.

On their way they saw big bopping bowers

that cut off flowers just for you.

They saw big clopping cloppers

sip sopping soppers.

The flowers are red, pink or blue

The birthday cat said, ” Let’s see what time it is.”

So they went to a farm

where there was a time telling arm.

The arm said, “It’s a hair past a freckle.”

That means it’s 5 o’clock,

time for the  birthday bash in a kettle.

They needed something to take them in,

so they go to the super dooper mini cooper.

It drove them all the way to the kettle bin.

In the kettle the party began

with head Zonking Zonkers fron planet Can-Can.

The party is great,

the food and the cake,

the birthday cat gave me a brand new cape.

It was 10 pm, the presents came in

there were so many

she put them all in a bin

At 12 a.m. Katy’s birthday was over,

the birthday cat drove her home on a big, soft clover.

So that’s what they do in Mathicadoodle,

the birthday cat gives you gifts and a poodle.

If you’re birthday is tomorrow, in May or today,

I will always say, ” Happy Birthday!”

Laugh Out Loud!

Despicable Me!

I have just finished watching the movie Despicable Me for like the umpteenth time and I am a die hard fan. I must admit when I first saw the previews I thought it would be a complete flop. Now when I’m having a day where I need something to make me smile I turn to this flick with out hesitating. So please enjoy this video and go watch it if you haven’t and if you have, let it  be your medicine when you need laughter.  I should mention that I love this movie so much that before I received my own copy of it as a gift from a friend, I’d send my kids to my neighbor across the street to borrow it. Enjoy the video and remember to watch this if you have a Dr. Gru or a Vector in your life…it makes it easier to cope with those kinds of people! Oh, And if you happen to BE a Dr. Gru or Vector type of personality watch it and laugh at yourself; that’s good for your health you know :)!

SUMMER!

Today my daughter came up to me and said the dreadful words,” I’m bored.” School is out for the summer and the season looms ahead of us. She explained that she had done everything to avert the “boredom monster” as I used to perceive it. “Mama, I have danced, I read, I did some art and now, I’m bored.” So I took a closer look at her statement and then I came up with an idea…me had a thought…or a chain of them any way.

I remember being a kid out of school for the summer and it never occurred to me to utter the “I’m bored” mantra of every school age kid. No way, I had to keep my mouth shut because if I ever dared make such a declaration, my aunt would have found me more work to do. As it is I had to help her shine her collection of sterling silver which she kept in a china cabinet that went from floor to ceiling and it was full of beautiful silver artifacts. Then if that wasn’t enough to keep my little hands busy, she expected me to do some kind of needle work. So you see, I became an expert at biting my tongue and not letting those 2 little words escape my lips.

So as I came back to the present and I studied my daughter laying on the couch in the living room; I told her what I had always wanted to hear from my aunt’s mouth but it never came,” It’s ok to not always be doing something .” My girl looked at me and I saw her relax right away as I continued,” I don’t think you’re bored,I think you might feel like you always have to be doing something…just enjoy yourself..it’s still good to day dream ok?” She smiled as she settled on the couch to continue doing absolutely NOTHING!

SCHOOL’S OUT FOR THE SUMMER!

I enjoy summer vacation because I believe something special happens to me as a teacher and to my kids that I teach;just as life reflects nature;summer is a season of growing in ways that won’t be apparent until the following fall when school begins anew. During this season of rest and growth;we get rejuvenated and our roots tend to go deeper. I live out in the desert and nature hibernates when the weather is scorching;likewise I believe that as we rest from all school work and pressures that accompany the lives of teachers and their students;summer is when we “marinade” in all the knowledge that was acquired in the previous school year

I have seen it personally year after year;every time school starts back up for us,my kids come in eager to start. Also ,skills that may not have come easy to some of them, somehow after summer vacation, they grasp them . Being that I run a small school I have the privilege of seeing up close changes that perhaps might be missed if my kids swam in a bigger pond..

So go ahead, kick off your shoes, buy a new bathing suit, grill out, plan a vacation some where far away or maybe stay close by;but whatever you choose to do, whether it’s a lot, a little or maybe nothing at all..ENJOY yourself and live!  See you next Fall young people :)!!!

Family First

Disneyland's Sleeping Beauty Castle on May 5, ...
Image via Wikipedia
I am a keen observer. When my kid’s friends come over I listen to their conversations as I’m busy doing things. I hear how the kids go on out of state trips to amusement parks and such with out their parents. It almost seems that the school has become a type of surrogate parent for kids now a days. The kids I talk to for the most part aren’t even phased by the fact that their family isn’t as tight as it needs to be. I came away thinking that perhaps I’m bringing my kids up to be too attached to their immediate family; then I remember that that’s the way it was intended to be.

If you ever read The Bible Genesis 10:4,20,31,32; we find the first reference to “nations” arising from family groups. You can see how important the family is to God. God created the family before He gave us ways to govern ourselves. So if family is deemed important to The Creator, shouldn’t we be placing family first? I have been ridiculed to my face and behind my back by people who think I’m doing a disservice to my kids by not sending them to public school. These nay sayers always mock saying that my kids are overly sheltered. Interestingly enough when I consider the source of these ignorant comments, I find most of these people don’t have very good family situations. I just shake my head and wonder how they can judge me for what I do when I’ve never bother them about their unruly, rude kids.

Part Two

LEGOS!

Building with Legos is a serious business

around my home. My 13 year old son and

his 10 year old sister have been playing

with Legos for years. They have built a

whole world of Legos and they dubbed it

LEGOLAND. My son can go on the Lego

web site, look at the schematics for a Lego

car model for a few seconds and then a few

hours later, he’s built the same car from

memory.

What’s really going one underneath all

that playing? Well for starters, building

with Legos teaches problem solving. It

allows for creativity which leads to some

great inventions! And also I believe there

are things going on in the child’s brain

that defy labeling. So next time your child

is engrossed with Legos, don’t pull her

away from them, go buy her another few

hundred blocks and encourage this type of

creativity.
