SMALL IS THE NEW BIG!

Do you ever feel small and that what you do seems insignificant? I sure do from time to time. I started The Henderson Poets, a group that meets on Tuesday evenings at The Coffee House close to my home. We are small in number but that does not matter one iota to me. People from all walks of life show up. Some times 15 or more people show up, other times it’s less. But I keep plugging on and do you know why? Because I believe what I’m doing matters! We live in a society where everyone is always number crunching. We measure success by the number of books we sold or the numbers in our bank account and even our number of friends on Facebook. Did you ever stop to consider that small is the new big? What if me showing up at the Coffee House every Tuesday night is just to touch one other soul?

A few weeks ago I invited a very nice man to join us. He said he writes poetry but he had never shared before.  Last night he came and shared poems he wrote  during what seems to have been a traumatic divorce. He moved all of us because as he read, he wept openly. Dear readers, that is why I LOVE what I do. I believe poetry is meant to be performed live. A dear friend of mine said to me upon our first meeting,” Our words are our life.” How true that is! How amazing it is and an honor to have the chance to give other poets a platform from which they can come and bare their souls to us. We all benefit when a soul reaches out to touch us with their light.

So next time you think what you do is not important consider that  maybe your presence in some one’s life might be the one thing that is keeping that person alive. The work you do no matter how menial in your eyes, maybe some one else’s miracle and moment of joy. Take your eyes off the numbers and value what you do because really, you’re the only one capable of doing what you do. What you do and who you are is irreplaceable..think on that!

WHAT A DAY!

I just wanted to share some pictures and a few of the details that went into making my book launch for Salsa! The Taste of Life a hit! I met up with a couple of fellow writers, M Cid D’Angelo and Toni Pacini who really showed love and support. Receiving encouragement from your peers is great!

I had Vital Germaine, another fellow writer read for me in the early part of the day. He did an amazing job too!

Performers Jaelyn Denise and Darla Beaux brought joy to the whole day with their amazing talents.

My neighbor who lives in back of me, offered her artistic skills by doing great face painting, which many enjoyed.

At the end of the day I read 3 excerpts from my book to a full house. I shared the poem I dedicated to my family,MI FAMILIA, and  my own strong emotions caught me off guard , when I gave thanks to my long deceased parents. You never know how your own words will affect you as you share them with an audience.

After my readings several people came up and congratulated me saying that they felt what I wrote and could picture what I describe clear as day. Folks, THAT was the topping to end my wonderful day! That is why I write; so you my amazing readers can feel the music of my heart and picture what I see when I close my eyes. When you read me, I hope to take you places far away and touch your soul all at the same time. If I don’t ,I’m not doing my job as a writer 🙂

A warm thank you goes to ALL who helped me put my event together and to ALL who stopped in to celebrate my book! You all are the BEST and so are YOU my dear readers!!!

I am still on cloud 9 and not ready to land yet!! Happy Sunday!!!

ESCAPE…

Escape
Escapate conmigo
Come away with me
See the world
From a better view
Escape to the ocean
Escape to the sea
Run away with me
The mountains beckon
And this love’s got me flying higher than a kite
And my heart it reckons
That nothing ventured is nothing gained
Escape
Escapate conmigo
Let’s run away
Mi amor, mi lindo amigo, My beloved, my friend
Me voy contigo, I’m going with you
Por que si no me ahogo…if not I’ll drown…

SUDDENLY…

SUDDENLY
Our first tango in Paris
Your first caress
Your first kiss
Never say never
Good things do happen
Suddenly

One day there is nothing but death
Suddenly life sprouts up
One day it’s bleak
Suddenly I see  the sun peak
One day it’s all cold endless nights
Suddenly the nights grow shorter
One day muffled cries into my pillow
Suddenly I laugh tossing my head back

One day I die
From lie after lie
Suddenly love knocks on my door
And my feet hit the floor
I can’t wait to see what’s in store
In a not too distant shore

Un dia un suspiro,                                             One day I sigh
De pronto un escalofrio,                                Suddenly shivers up and down my spine
Un dia bebo vino sola,                                    One day alone, I drink red wine
Depronto tengo quien llene mi copa  ,     Suddenly you fill my glass

One day I belong to no one
Suddenly you showed up!

NOT SCARY AT ALL

NOT SCARY AT ALL
This world is not as scary as they told us
The time clock ticks
Time marches on
And things go on unabated,
litigated
Emancipated.
There is nothing new under the sun
Days gone by
People are still people
And they keep to their own

The world is not as scary as they said
Tabu things
Belong to the past
Kids grow up fast
Nothing ever lasts

They painted for us a dangerous world
And I defy that
Boy still meets girl
And he tips his hat
Boy meets girl
A perfect match they make
Mom and dad frown
They have to let go
Cuz all their kids are almost grown

Don’t tell the young guns this world is scary
They don’t care
They won’t listen to your outdated fears
Let them eat, drink and be merry
Don’t even think they are clueless
Sometimes let ‘em surprise you
At times you’re the one who needs a clue.

Tiny Star

This is a story I used to tell my 4 kids when they were little. I finally sat down and wrote it. I hope you enjoy this, a piece of my kid’s childhood. They still remember it and that warms my heart!

Once upon a time there was a tiny star who lived in the sapphire blue midnight skies. She wanted so much to be noticed but she was just a tiny twinkle in the heavens. She would see all the shooting stars flying by her at amazing speeds. She always wondered where they went once they fell out of the heavens, earth-bound,  never to be seen or heard from again. So she asked The North Star, the wisest of all the nova,

” North Star, please tell me how I can be like all those amazing shooting stars that whiz on by me everyday!” The North Star frowned and responded in his deep gentle voice of a caring grandpa,

” Darling, you don’t want to be them. Not all is as it seems.”

Tiny Star frowned and she jumped up and down exclaiming,

” But I DO! It’s what I wanted to be since I was born.” North Star put his arm around her and sat Tiny Star on his ancient lap. He let her get settled and then he answered.

” No, you don’t. For you see, shooting stars are here one day and gone tomorrow. They shoot off in a bang and no one ever sees them again.” Tiny Star was wide-eyed and she said,

” WHAT?? Where do they go?” North Star answered with a chuckle,

” They go nowhere mi amor. They die and can never shine like you will always shine. People don’t remember them like they remember you. People don’t name shooting stars, they name the real, fixed stars like you who form  part of major constellations. Remember that.” Tiny Star was amazed,

” You mean I matter? You mean people know my name?”  North Star answered  her with a calm smile and a wink,

” Of course they do because your name is written in the stars by God‘s own hand.” Tiny Star was never the same after she discovered her true identity and purpose.

THE END!

Flor del Decierto

Una flor que nacio en el decierto
Me haces feliz
Eso es muy cierto
Te digo que te amo
Te digo que te quiero
Mi bella flor del decierto

Eres una luz
Una linda fragancia
Resplandeciente sonrisa tienes
Creces mas linda cada dia
Ya pronto terminara tu infancia
Sigue tus sueños niña divina ,
por que todo esta a tu alcance.

MIRAME

Mirame: Look  me in the eye

Tell me you don’t care for me

Tell me there’s nothing left

In your heart for us.

Mirame: Look me in the eye

Tell me your heart-

Still doesn’t flutter

When you hear my voice on the telephone…

Mirame: Look me in the eye

Tell me you don’t

Dream of me-

And you holding me close

Mirame: Look me in the eye

Tell me you don’t

Lose count of the times

You found yourself thinking of us…

A Sunset in a Rose

A sunset in a rose:

The sun came up

It traveled west

Found its home in a rose.

The rose bud opened

After a long repose

One by one the petals blossomed-

The the sun set in the rose

A dozen roses have I

All heavenly scented

Had a tear in my eye

Made my heart glad

Made me sing

A sunset in a rose

Such a beautiful thing!
