I thought it appropriate to share this because we’re celebrating Independence Day week-end. On 9-11 I was trying to make sense of what had just happened to our country. I am a person of action and I wanted to do something to honor the U.S.A. Back then my kids were all very young and I turned it into a learning opportunity. I took out our flag and they asked me what I was doing. I said we were going to hang it outside and all 4 of them followed me to the front of our home. Once I hung it I stood back and then it occurred to me to teach my kids The Pledge of Allegiance. So I told them to place their right hand over their heart and repeat after me. As we said each line I explained to them what each line meant, because I wanted them to not just be reciting some lines like little parrots. Afterward we went inside and we took out some art supplies and we all made U.S. flags to send to relatives and friends in the mail.
I am posting this video because I believe Red Skelton did a beautiful job in explaining what The Pledge of Allegiance is really all about. Enjoy your Independence Day!
